Rebuilding guardian.co.uk

Real life Goldsmiths 3
Chair: Brian Suda (TM Software)

Guardian.co.uk one of the largest news sites, with 18M international users, has won the Webby award for the Best Newspaper Website for the last 3 years.

Recently (and especially by the time of the conference) guardian.co.uk has undergone a transformation that has seen a redesign and a change in information architecture to be more resource oriented. Behind the scenes, the technology platform has been completely replaced and updated using agile development methods.

We will present the most interesting aspects of our new technical and information architecture, and how we have scaled useful concepts to work in a large and complex organisation whilst maintaining simplicity.

We will focus on:

  • using the web for services to avoid internal complexity in our software
  • implementing web 2.0 ideas at an enterprise scale without the enterprise baggage.
  • Using tagging to connect content and services
  • How we prepared our archive and ongoing information architecture for the social web.
